Update on Recent Public Safety Incident

October 22, 2025

Dear Johns Hopkins Homewood Community,

This afternoon, the Baltimore Police Department (BPD) along with the Johns Hopkins Police Department (JHPD) announced the arrest of a suspect in the attempted rape that took place on the Homewood campus on Saturday evening.

As we shared on Sunday, the JHPD and Public Safety have been actively working to support the BPD in the investigation of this crime, including through providing security camera images and working with Metro Crime Stoppers to offer a reward for the tips that ultimately helped to accelerate the investigation. We are deeply grateful to the BPD for their partnership and swift response to identify and apprehend the suspect.

This has been a deeply distressing situation for many members of the Hopkins community. The public safety and community support resources that we shared over the weekend remain available, and representatives from Student Affairs and Student Health and Well-Being will continue meeting with students on campus to answer questions and provide support.

Resources available to our community include:

  • Public Safety offers security escort services to students and other affiliates walking to their cars or homes at night, including those who live on campus. Learn more about security escort service or call 410-516-4600 to request a safety escort.
  • The free LiveSafe app provides real-time, two-way communication with Johns Hopkins Public Safety officers, 24/7, at the push of a button.
  • Secure Your Nest: Blue Jay Safety Month events offer students resources and guidance to keep themselves and others safe, increase their situational awareness, and learn tips for staying safe on and off campus.
  • The Office of Health Promotion & Well Being’s We Listen, You Decide website compiles confidential resources available to students regarding sexual violence or misconduct, and the Sexual Assault Helpline is available 24/7 at 410-516-7333.
  • For faculty and staff, the Johns Hopkins Employee Assistance Program (JHEAP) is available to all employees around the clock, 365 days a year, by phone at 888-978-1262 or online via CCA@YourService – Company Code: JHEAP.

The safety and well-being of all members of our community will always be our highest priority, and we are fully committed to ensuring that you can feel safe and supported where you live, learn, and work.

Sincerely,

Branville G. Bard Jr.
