Summary of Major Crime Incidents 

The following is a summary of assaults, robberies, commercial robberies, and other serious crimes in the areas on and immediately surrounding the Johns Hopkins Peabody campus, as reported in alerts issued by Johns Hopkins Security.

2023

OCTOBER

October 22, 2023, 6:01 a.m., first block of E. Centre Street. Armed robbery. A group of suspects in a dark colored sedan pulled up next to the victim’s car, which was parked on Centre Street near Charles Street. One suspect pointed a handgun at the victim and took their wallet, while another suspect searched the vehicle from the passenger’s side. The suspects then drove to the corner of Centre and St. Paul, where two suspected exited the vehicle and one suspect pointed a handgun at a second victim who was walking across the street. The suspects took the victim’s cell phone and shopping bag. The suspects then fled in the vehicle, going east on Centre St. toward Calvert St. No injuries reported.

JULY

July 18, 2023, 9:40 p.m., unit block of West Mount Vernon Place. Carjacking. The non-affiliate victim was exiting their vehicle when three suspects approached them. One of them pointed a handgun at the victim and demanded their car keys.  The victim complied, and the suspects drove away in their vehicle. No injuries reported.

2022

OCTOBER

October 13, 2022, 1:40 a.m., 800 block of Cathedral Street. Armed robbery. A group of Peabody students were walking in the area when a four-door, white sedan stopped, and three suspects exited. One suspect displayed a handgun. Taken: two cell phones and a backpack. The suspects then drove away.  No injuries reported.

APRIL

April 22, 2022, 3:24 p.m., 7-Eleven, 529 N. Charles St. Armed robbery. A suspect pointed a black handgun at the clerk and took cash. The suspect was last seen fleeing northbound on Calvert St. No injuries reported.

April 10, 2022, 6:54 p.m., 600 block of St. Paul Street. Attempted strong-arm robbery. A non-affiliate victim was assaulted by two suspects who attempted to take the victim’s cell phone. The suspects fled south on St. Paul Street. The victim sustained minor injuries.

MARCH

March 22, 2022, 8 p.m., Gallery Grill, first block of West Centre Street. A Peabody student was waiting for food when four teenagers walked by. One of the teenagers returned and asked for $5, telling the student that he would hurt the student if the student did not comply.  The student only had $2, so the suspect asked the student to walk to a nearby 7-Eleven and withdraw cash from an ATM. The student withdrew $15 and gave it to the suspect, who then left the store. No injuries reported.

JANUARY

January 22, 2022, 1 a.m., 500 block of N. Charles Street. Armed car-jacking. A non-affiliate was walking to her running car when a suspect approached, produced a handgun, and struck the victim several times on the head. The suspect pushed the victim aside and got into her car, driving north of Charles St. and out of sight. 

2021

DECEMBER

December 20, 2021, 9:10 a.m., 600 block of St. Paul Street, Homewood-Peabody-JHMI Shuttle stop. Assault. An affiliate was about to board the shuttle when an unknown suspect struck him in the back of the head, causing the affiliate to sustain a mild concussion. The suspect walked southbound on St. Paul Street.

NOVEMBER

November 29, 2021, 3:35 p.m., first block of East Centre Street. Robbery. A Peabody student was walking in the first block of East Centre Street when he was approached by two suspects who demanded his wallet. When the student refused, the suspects dragged him to the ground and took his wallet. The suspects then fled eastbound on Centre Street. The student sustained minor bruising, as well as cuts on his face and finger.

OCTOBER

October 15, 2021, 3 a.m., 600 block Washington Place, at the bus stop. Armed robbery. A non-affiliate encountered the suspects in the 7-Eleven located at 529 N. Charles St. The suspects followed the victim to the 600 block of Washington Place, where the male suspect displayed a handgun and demanded the content of the victim’s pockets. Taken: a cell phone, a charger, a wallet case, and keys. Suspects then fled on a scooter. No injuries reported.

AUGUST

August 30, 2021, 12:35 a.m., 2900 block of N. Calvert Street between 29th and 30th streets. Armed carjacking. Non-affiliates exited their vehicle and were approached by three suspects. One suspect yelled “hey” and pointed a handgun at the driver’s head and struck him with it. The suspects got into the vehicle and drove away. The vehicle was last seen heading north on Calvert Street. Both victims’ cellphones, inside the vehicle, were also taken. No injuries reported.

August 29, 2021, 10:40 p.m., first block of East Centre Street near St. Paul Street. Assault. A Peabody contractor was punched by an unknown suspect.

MAY

May 13, 2021, 11:59 a.m., first block of East Madison Street. Strong-arm robbery.  A suspect struck the victim a number of times. The victim dropped his wallet, and the suspect picked it up and fled eastbound on Madison St. No injuries reported.

May 5, 2021, 4:04 p.m, 600 block of Washington Place. Strong-arm robbery. Two male suspects approached the non-affiliate victim, grabbed him by the arm, and took the victim’s property before fleeing the scene. Taken: a cell phone and a wallet containing cash.  

FEBRUARY

February 9, 2021, 10:25 a.m., first block of E. Mount Vernon Place. Armed robbery. A male suspect wearing orange clothing entered a home under renovation and robbed contractors working inside. The suspect fled north on Charles Street.

JANUARY

January 9, 2021, 6:12 p.m., 700 block of Washington Place. Aggravated assault. Two suspects punched and kicked the nonaffiliate victim, who sustained a cut above his eye. After fleeing the the scene, one suspect was arrested.

2020

NOVEMBER

November 27, 2020, 1:35 p.m., first block of E. Mount Vernon Place. Aggravated assault. A suspect struck a victim in the head with a metal pole before fleeing the scene in his vehicle. 

JUNE

June 28, 2020, 3:33 p.m., 700 block of Washington Place. Aggravated assault. A non-affiliate victim was riding his bike when he got into an argument with a man who struck the victim in the head with a brick. The suspect fled eastbound on Madison Street.

FEBRUARY

Feb. 14, 2020, 12:40 a.m., 600 block of Washington Place. Robbery. A Peabody sophomore was approached by a suspect who told the victim to hand over his property. Taken: money and a bank card. No injuries reported. Police believe that the same suspect is responsible for a robbery that took place in the 100 block of W. Monument St. on Feb. 11 at 9:37 p.m. 

Feb. 6, 2020, 10:30 p.m., 600 block of St. Paul Street. Robbery. The victim was approached by two males wearing all black who told the victim to hand over everything he had. Taken: a backpack containing an iPhone, Bose headphones, and a wallet. No injuries reported.

2019

SEPTEMBER 

Sept. 30, 2019, 4 p.m., 500 block of N. Charles Street. Theft. A cell phone was taken from a Peabody student.

Sept. 27, 2019, 2:50 p.m., 600 block St. Paul St. Theft. A cell phone was taken from a victim.

Sept. 26, 2019, 2:40 p.m., 600 block Washington Place. Theft. A cell phone was taken from a victim.

AUGUST 

Aug. 22, 2019, 8:30 p.m., in an alley off of the 600 block of Washington Place. Common assault. A group of seven to eight teens repeatedly struck a Peabody graduate student on the upper body before the student was able to flee. The victim was not injured. 

MAY

May 19, 2019, 12:15 p.m., Homewood-Peabody-JHMI shuttle stop, 600 block St. Paul Street. Aggravated assault. A man threw a rock, striking a School of Medicine student in the back of the head before heading north on St. Paul and west on Mount Vernon Place. The student was injured, but did not require medical attention. 

FEBRUARY

Feb. 16, 2019, 12:07 a.m., 700 block of Washington Place. Robbery. A non-affiliate was approached by two individuals who asked for bus money, grabbed the non-affiliate’s wallet, and searched his pockets before throwing the wallet and phone to the ground. Taken: Cash.

Feb. 11, 2019, 8:05 p.m., 400 block of N. Charles Street. Robbery. An individual approached a student in front of an ATM. Taken: A purse. 

JANUARY

Jan. 31, 2019, 2:45 p.m., 600 block of St. Paul Street. Armed robbery. A non-affiliate was approached by an individual with a knife. Taken: A designer bag and cash. 

Jan. 21, 2019, 6:19 a.m., 600 block St. Paul Street. Armed robbery. Two individuals exited an SUV at the Homewood-Peabody-JHMI shuttle stop, pushed a Johns Hopkins affiliate against a wall and robbed the affiliate at gunpoint. (Four suspects were later arrested by Baltimore police.) Taken: cell phone.

2018

AUGUST

Aug. 29, 2018, 7:20 p.m., 600 block of St. Paul Street. Assault. A student was struck in the face while attempting to intervene to stop an individual chasing a non-affiliate.

Aug. 28, 2018, 12:15 p.m., 600 block of N. Charles Street. Aggravated assault. A single individual held a knife for several seconds to the side of a student sitting on a bench at a shuttle stop, then said that the student had been “punked.” 

JUNE

June 20, 2018, 11:57 a.m., Sexual assault. Unit block E. Centre Street. A Peabody Security officer investigating a report of a disturbance was inappropriately touched. The assault was committed by one of two individuals who had allegedly been engaging in aggressive filming of patrons and staff at Maestro’s Café, a university-operated food-service establishment. 

MAY

May 18, 2018, 12:15 p.m., Aggravated assault. Unit block E. Centre Street. Student standing along the block was hit in the right arm, neck and back by a paintball gun fired from a passing car. 

May 3, 2018, 11:30 a.m., Assault and robbery. 700 block N. Charles Street. Student walking toward Johns Hopkins shuttle stop was pushed by a male individual. Taken: phone.

APRIL

April 30, 2018, 2:25 p.m., Attempted armed robbery. Unit block E. Madison Street between Charles and St. Paul streets. Student approached at knifepoint by one individual, who demanded a phone but left without taking it when he saw the model of phone the student carried. Description of individual similar to that in the other April 30 crime, which occurred shortly before and nearby.

April 30, 2018, 2 p.m., Attempted armed robbery. 600 block St. Paul Street. Student at Johns Hopkins shuttle stop approached at knifepoint by one individual, who demanded money but fled without taking any.

April 29, 2018, 1:45 a.m., Armed robbery. 700 block N. Charles Street. Student and friends ordered at gunpoint into an alley, where suspect robbed the student. Taken: wallet, phone.

April 26, 2018, 11:30 a.m., Armed robbery. 500 block St. Paul Street. Student robbed at knifepoint by two individuals. This occurred shortly after and nearby a similar crime. The victim’s description of the individuals matched that in the other April 26 crime. Taken: phone.

April 26, 2018, 11 a.m., Attempted armed robbery. 600 block St. Paul Street. Student at Johns Hopkins shuttle stop approached by two male individuals who demanded his phone at knifepoint. Individuals fled when others arrived at the shuttle stop.

2017

OCTOBER

Oct. 20, 2017, 7:13 p.m., Assault and attempted robbery, followed immediately by robbery. Unit block E. Mount Vernon Place and nearby. Non-affiliate was struck by individuals who attempted to take his wallet. When victim resisted, individuals ran to the 600 block of St. Paul Street and snatched another non-affilate’s phone. Taken: phone. 

SEPTEMBER

Sept. 18, 2017, 8:30 p.m., Assault and attempted robbery. Unit block E. Mount Vernon Place. A Peabody Prep parent was struck in the face by individuals who attempted to take the parent’s phone. 

AUGUST

Aug. 30, 2017, 11 p.m., Armed robbery. 700 block N. Charles Street. Student robbed by individual who stated that he had a gun. Taken: wallet, phone.
